Reading Recovery
At
Coopers Plains State School
Coopers Plains State School provides an early intervention program in reading and writing called Reading Recovery. Some children do not make good progress in group teaching situations and for different reasons do not get off to a good start in the literacy instruction of their classrooms during the first year of school. To help these children catch up with their average classmates they receive a series of individually designed lessons. One teacher and one child work together in ways that allow many instructional adjustments to be made that will help each particular child move forward.
In Term 1, 2007 four children received individual half hour lessons every day and all of these children have made progress. They are able to read and write simple stories and are beginning to gain confidence as they are working at their own individual levels of ability. In Term 2, two extra children will also be able to take advantage of instruction in a series of Reading Recovery lessons.

Early Literacy Foundations
The E.L.F. program is run at Coopers Plains State School to help children in Year 2 establish a firm foundation of basic literacy skills.
ALL year 2 children are tested at the beginning of the year so we can identify struggling students early to provide appropriate assistance. We test across a wide range of skills including understanding initial and final sounds, spelling, handwriting, cutting and gross motor skills.
The Learning Support Teacher runs two groups of E.L.F. during the year taking 6 students at a time. The students work through a 12 week course focusing on two key areas:
1. Phonological awareness and its application to reading and spelling.
2. Sensory-motor skills necessary for maintaining attention, sitting upright and handwriting.
The E.L.F. program was developed at the University of Qld by Speech Therapists and Occupational Therapists. Using this program in conjunction with Reading Recovery and our leveled reading groups helps the children make marked improvements in their literacy skills.
